Community Service
What does the Community Service Committee Do?
Community service lies at the core of The American Legion's fundamental principles and is a fundamental element of the Constitution's Preamble, which emphasizes the cultivation of a sense of individual responsibility towards the community, state, and nation.
In Pennsylvania, The American Legion recognizes the crucial role that communities play in the American way of life, with Legion posts often assuming leadership roles in enhancing their communities. Most of these initiatives begin at the grassroots level, involving youth in activities such as American Legion Baseball, Scouting, Shooting Sports, and flag education. Local programs may also encompass teen centers, park district activities like hiking, concerts, street dances, festivals, fishing tournaments, ice skating, sledding, craft projects, and bicycle safety programs.
Other Legion programs are deeply rooted in the community, such as the Service to God and Country program, which aims to promote regular attendance at religious institutions, daily family prayer, and the religious education of children. Another widespread Legion program is Get Out the Vote, focusing on civic engagement. Community betterment efforts may also include tasks like installing and maintaining playground equipment, constructing and upkeeping memorials, and organizing holiday programs for Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day. All of these endeavors are conducted within our communities, aiming to enhance the quality of life for residents and neighbors.
