About the Sons
The Sons of the American Legion (Sons or SAL) was founded in 1932 and exist to honor the service and sacrifice of Legionnaires.
Learn about the Sons
The Sons organization comprises males of all ages whose parents or grandparents have served in the U.S. military and were eligible for American Legion membership. While the Sons has its distinct membership, it's important to note that it operates as a program under The American Legion rather than a separate entity. Many Legionnaires maintain dual membership in both organizations.
At the local level, the Sons organization is structured into squadrons, each of which is affiliated with a local American Legion post. The charter of a squadron is contingent upon the charter of its parent post. However, squadrons have the autonomy to determine the scope of their community, state, and national services. They are granted flexibility in planning programs and activities tailored to their specific needs, while always keeping in mind the core mission of the Sons: to bolster the four pillars of The American Legion. Consequently, squadron initiatives focus on upholding American traditions and values, enhancing the well-being of our nation's children, providing support to veterans and their families, and instilling the principles of good citizenship.
Membership in the Sons of The American Legion is open to all male descendants, including adopted sons and stepsons, of members of The American Legion, as well as male descendants of veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice in Service during World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, the Persian Gulf War, and the War on Terrorism, within the specified timeframes outlined in Article IV, Section 1, of the National Constitution of The American Legion. There is only one category of membership, which is active membership.
